Fic Masterlist

I have now written a non-Inception fic (I swear I will get back to finishing The Man Who... trilogy). So a bit of reshuffling of the fic masterlist is apparently required.

Also, I am currently reposting everything to Ao3

Les Misérables

Illusion Rating: PG-13
Grantaire staggering home drunk at three am may be a common event. But this evening wasn't like the others, thankfully Courfeyrac is there to pick up the pieces.
Or at Ao3

Inception

The man who... Trilogy

Chronological Order:

The man who had only dreams. Rating: PG-13
Eames had never had a relationship that he could measure in years, family excluded of course, until he met Arthur. He suspected Arthur has never had a relationship at all, at least not one involving messy things like emotions.
Ao3
Part 1 part 2 part 3 part 4a part 4b part 5a part 5b part 6a part 6b

The man who had none of the luck Rating: R
Warnings: non-graphic violence, torture and non-con (this is not a nice fic)
The trouble with being the best in the mind crime business is that you make a lot of enemies and even Saito's influence can't keep the wolves away for ever.
Since I am failing to rewrite effectively, I have decided to put all bits back up whilst I continue the rewrite. So if you see bits strangely changing in between one read and the next, you know why.
Ao3

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6

The man who had all the secrets - ON HOLD
As people can probably tell by the dates, RL bit me hard and I don't know when - if ever, I'll get round to writing this.
The dreamshare community heard the tales. Eames was dead, murdered on a job if 'they' were to be believed. Rumours were abound about who could have done it, how and why. All anyone knew for certain is that they didn't want to have their names anywhere near it when Arthur came knocking.

Stand Alones - in The Man Who... universe but don't need to have read the main plotline

Knowing v Understanding Rating PG-13
Warnings: oblique allusion to both rape and attempted rape at the end
Phillipa has known her Uncle Eames and Uncle Arthur almost all her life, but she doesn't think she'll ever really understand them.
Also now on Ao3

Dear Deidre...
Rating R
Dear Deidre, I adore my boyfriend greatly, and normally our sex life is really quite spectacular but lately I am beginning to fear that our carnal relations have hit an unfortunate hitch.

How to Get Married in 5 Easy Steps
Rating PG-13
Who would have thought getting married would be quite so complex a task?
Part 1, Part 2

Stand Alones - no particular universe

Christmas conversing
Rating PG
A christmas conversation by an open fire

New Fic! Illusion - Les Misérables

Title: Illusion
Pairing: Courfeyrac & Grantaire Bro!Otp, vague allusions to unrequited Enjolras/Grantaire (because it wouldn't be a Les Mis fic if it didn't)
Rating: PG-13
disclaimer: I am fully aware I'm probably making Victor Hugo spin in his gave (Mais il me pardonnera, j'en suis sûre!)
Warnings: Allusions to off-screen non-con, angst. No really, lots of angst. Modern AU! Also not Beta'd.
Summary: Grantaire staggering home drunk at three am may be a common event. But this evening wasn't like the others, thankfully Courfeyrac is there to pick up the pieces.

Author's note: This is going to be part of an eventual series - but since the idea wouldn't leave me alone, so I ended up writting it as a stand-alone so start with. The rape/non-con is entierly off-screen - this fic deals with the aftermath.

The title is taken from a heartbreaking VNV Nation song - Illusion

Finally, not beta-ed, all mistakes are mine (but if anyone wants to volunteer, I won't say no).

Read on AO3 or follow the fake cut - IllusionCollapse )
Title: Of Family, Favours and Dreams
Author: gemnoire
Pairing(s): Arthur/Eames, Dom/Mal
Rating: R
Word Count: 9,582
Warnings: Some violence, mentions of sexism and homophobia

Summary: As with so many things, it all started with a favour. A favour and an on-going feud between two criminal families, which eventually may lead to Cobb making it back home to his family and his wife. If he survives. (Inception/Godfather AU)

Part 1 | Interlude | Part 2

Author's Notes: Written originally for i_reversebang. Big thank you for almostgaby for the inspiring trailer to my fic and for effectively just letting me run wild with it. A second massive thank you as always to my Beta sweetsigh for making my god-awful spelling and grammer into something close to proper english. Real Life kicked me hard whilst writing this, I am so glad I managed to get it done in time.
or why Eames may have read at university and would be happy with a Damien but probably not a Douglas or a Desmond.

The next part in my quick and dirty overview of the British education system. Thank you very much for all your replies, I will attempt to incomportate some of the additional aspects you have mentioned into the guide with appropriate thanks, citations and attributions.

Usual caveats - this is focused mostly on England/Wales/N Ireland University system, I will try and highlight Scotland differences, but I went to Uni in England, so that's what I know. I did go from BSc all the way up to PhD, so I like to think I'm pretty au fait with the academic system, but I did so all at the same uni (York), so as always there are variations I may not have picked up.

I decided to split up the University guide into two bits because it was becoming excessive. I know there are things I haven't dealt with (Undergraduate masters, clinical doctorates, law degrees) but this should cover the basics of degrees pretty well.

Next part will be over University life, University fees (and why students have been rioting) and types of University.

Finally, this is meant to be a high level over-view not a definitive guide - and I am in no way touching the recent changes made because I have no idea of their impact.

On to the guideCollapse )
Title: How to get married in 5 easy steps 2/2
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them.
Warnings: Fluff, angst (mostly fluff really - teeth rotting levels of fluff)
Summary: Who would have thought getting married would be quite so complex a task?
Word count: 8,400 (why can't I write short fics anymore?)

Author's note: Next and final part of this one, my last stab at fluff before I'm firmly back with the angst for the final part of The Man Who Trilogy. This sits firmly in The Man Who... universe, set about a year after None of the Luck. It can be read in isolation but the most will be gained if Only Dreams and None of the Luck have been read previously.
Thank you to my beta sweetsigh, your feedback ended up making me write what I actually consider to be my favourite (ok, second favourite) line of the fic.

How to get Married in 5 easy steps part 2Collapse )
... Or why Eames could well have attended a fee paying public school, gone to college at 16 and didn't have a major at university.

I decided to write this guide with my current obsession of Inception in mind - but really it can be applicable to any British characters set in modern times. I decided to write this because of the frequent frustration felt not only with small errors made by fanfic authors (understandable, I probably make excessive numbers of them when trying to write about US education) but also the oh-so-frequent failure to even acknowledge that there is a difference.

This is not to get at anyone, I have enjoyed all the fics immensly, but rather to offer a quick and easy reference guide to making descriptions of, say, Eames' childhood education or a UK based College!AU more realistic.

A couple of caveats: I only went to school in the UK from 16+, though I know a lot about pre-16 education, I didn't end up experiencing it myself. Secondly, I will focus on education in England, Wales and a lesser extent Northern Ireland. Scotland is... different, and I don't feel I quite know enough to speak with authority on the subject. Also the education system changed in the 70s, so prior to that things were slightly more complicated.

Finally of course, this is not meant to be definitive - any Brits wanting to chip in and correct me (or add to it) please do and I shall try and incorportate them with appropriate attribution/thanks.

So with much ado, onto the guide.Collapse )

Fic: Christmas conversing
author: Black Gem
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13
disclaimer: I own nothing, although I wouldn't say no to being offered them as a Christmas present
Summary: A christmas conversation by an open fire
Word count: 1029

Author's note: I actually wrote something short! A tiny drabble I wrote last night after a couple of glasses of wine and was started entirely as an exercise in getting the first few lines of "Let it snow" into a conversation. It ended up being an experiment in writing fic as just dialogue.
I also feel I should apologise to my lovely beta for completely bypassing her with this - but I wanted to post it for Christmas, so instead sweetsigh consider this a Christmas present.

Fic: Dear Deidre...

Title: Dear Deidre
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: R
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them.
Warnings: Fluff, not beta'd
Summary: Dear Deidre, I adore my boyfriend greatly, and normally our sex life is really quite spectacular but lately I am beginning to fear that our carnal relations have hit an unfortunate hitch.”
Word count: 5246

Author's note: This is complete and utter fluff, it has no meaningful purpose or existance other than, hopefully, to amuse. It theoretically sits in the The Man Who universe (probably somewhere in the three years between the end of ... Only Dreams and the beginning of ... None of the Luck) but you don't need to have read any of the other fics, and frankly I suspect the universe may disown it on principle.

Fic: The man who had only dreams 6b/6b

Title: The Man Who Had Only Dreams part 6b
author: Black Gem
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13 (possibly R for some of the language)
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them. I definitely don't own any bits of dialogue in this bit lifted from the film - that's all Nolan's creative genius.
Warnings: Not beta'd
Summary: Eames had never had a relationship that he could measure in years, family excluded of course, until he met Arthur. He suspected Arthur has never had a relationship at all, at least not one involving messy things like emotions.
Word count: 7369

Author's notes: Final part at last, all done. Thank you for all those sticking me through it and if you've been waiting to read it all in one go - well what are you waiting for.

Fic: The man who had only dreams 6a/6

Title: The Man Who Had Only Dreams part 6a
author: Black Gem
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them. I definitely don't own any bits of dialogue in this bit lifted from the film - that's all Nolan's creative genius.
Summary: Eames had never had a relationship that he could measure in years, family excluded of course, until he met Arthur. He suspected Arthur has never had a relationship at all, at least not one involving messy things like emotions.
Word count: 6045

Author's note: This part refers to spoilers for the Cobol Job prequel comic. If you haven't read that yet, why not? Go get it here. I'm also getting into the movie now, apologies for any liberties taken with the dialogue, any errors are entirely my own fault and my failing memories.

Fic: The man who had only dreams 5b/6

Title: The Man Who Had Only Dreams part 5b
author: Black Gem
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them.
Summary: Eames had never had a relationship that he could measure in years, family excluded of course, until he met Arthur. He suspected Arthur has never had a relationship at all, at least not one involving messy things like emotions.
Word count: 6468

Author's note: I'm so so sorry for the late update. The will was there but I literally have not had an internet connection between mid-friday morning (when this part wasn't quite ready) and 1am Sunday (when sleep became somewhat more important).
On another note... this part was hard to write, I realised at some point through it that I was really shit at writing arguments, which is a shame given who I'm writing about.

Kuala Lumpur, September, 2009: ArthurCollapse )

The man who... update schedule

Well work travel surprisingly means I have less time to write than normal - so the update schedule is looking like this:

This week-end (hopefully Friday/maybe Sunday) - Part 5b
Next week-end part 6a
Week-end after that part 6b

... I'll try not to split up part 6 - but I suspect its going to be a big one, so better to post two 5k chunks than wait ages to post one 10k one.

Sorry for those who have been waiting for part 5b this week, but it looks like that's not going to be happening now until the week-end

Fic: The man who had only dreams 5a/6

Title: The Man Who Had Only Dreams part 5a
author: Black Gem
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them.
Summary: Eames had never had a relationship that he could measure in years, family excluded of course, until he met Arthur. He suspected Arthur has never had a relationship at all, at least not one involving messy things like emotions.
Word count: 5090

Author's note: Again, chapter 5 is split up into two parts. This is mostly because although I'm pretty certain to finish the next half tomorrow, since I'm spending pretty much the whole day travelling with almost nothing else to do. On the other hand I'm going away for a week and I don't know what my internet access is going to be like, so I figured better to get out half a chapter than none at all this week-end. Expect part 5b in the next couple of days.

Fic: The man who had only dreams 4b/6

Title: The Man Who Had Only Dreams part 4b
author: Black Gem
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13
warnings: violence, angst
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them.
Summary: Eames had never had a relationship that he could measure in years, family excluded of course, until he met Arthur. He suspected Arthur has never had a relationship at all, at least not one involving messy things like emotions.
Word count: 6235

Author's note: Somehow I had this idea that this part would be much shorter than 4a... that doesn't seem to have happened, ah well

Milan, September, 2008: EamesCollapse )

Fic: The man who had only dreams 4a/6

Title: The Man Who Had Only Dreams part 4a
author: Black Gem
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13
warnings: violence, angst
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them.
Summary: Eames had never had a relationship that he could measure in years, family excluded of course, until he met Arthur. He suspected Arthur has never had a relationship at all, at least not one involving messy things like emotions.
Word count: 5319

Author's note: Well since I missed my week-end update and 2008 is looking to be even more of a monster, I've posted the first part mid-week with 4b hopefully over the week-end. Of course given how I ended this part, I'm not certain people will necessarily thank me for splitting it up.

Part 4a – Los Angeles, January, 2008: ArthurCollapse )

Part 4 delayed

Well, looks like I'm not going to be able to get part 4a done before I head away this week-end (I do tend to do most of my writing at the week-end anyway, due to work being crazy).

So it looks like the next update will be next week-end.

Fic: The man who had only dreams 3/6

Title: The Man Who Had Only Dreams part 3
author: Black Gem
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13
warnings: references to child abuse, angst
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them.
Summary: Eames had never had a relationship that he could measure in years, family excluded of course, until he met Arthur. He suspected Arthur has never had a relationship at all, at least not one involving messy things like emotions.
Word count: 9018

Author's note: Well this part turned into a massive monster and I suspect may be one of my weaker chapters, hopefully the next one may end up being a little more lighthearted *checks over rough notes for next part* or maybe not.
I'm away next week-end, so I'll probably post the next one in two parts, one at some point this week and one next week.

Part 3 – London, 1st January, 2007: EamesCollapse )

Fic: The man who had only dreams 2/6

Title: The Man Who Had Only Dreams part 2
author: Black Gem
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13 this part
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them.
Summary: Eames had never had a relationship that he could measure in years, family excluded of course, until he met Arthur. He suspected Arthur has never had a relationship at all, at least not one involving messy things like emotions.
Word count: 7133

Author's note 1: I swear I didn't plan for the parts of this fic to be quite so long, honest. But at least I'm keeping to my update schedule
Author's note 2: In case people are wondering, the God-Emperor of Mankind comes from this. Arthur always struck me as far more likely to have been into sci-fi and wargames when younger than Eames.

Part 2 – Paris, 2006: ArthurCollapse )

Fic: The Man Who Had Only Dreams 1/6

Title: The Man Who Had Only Dreams part 1
author: Black Gem
pairing: Arthur/Eames
rating: PG-13 this part
disclaimer: I own nothing, I'm just playing with them.
Summary: Eames had never had a relationship that he could measure in years, family excluded of course, until he met Arthur. He suspected Arthur has never had a relationship at all, at least not one involving messy things like emotions.

Author's note 1: This is a prequel to The Man who had None of the Luck, which can be found at my journal and will probably be part of a planned triology. You don't need to have read the previous story though for this to make sense (and in fact I imagine once done, this one will be better to read first).
Author's note 2: I am now back at work, this means updates will be much less frequent. I'm aiming for about a chapter a week - on the other hand the structure of the story should be that each part is relatively self-contained, so no evil cliffhangers here.
Author's note 3: I figure with the excessively long fics I could probably do with a beta, I still go over my previous offerings and find mistakes. So if anyone feels like offering, it would be gratefully appreciated.

Now with much ado, on with the fic.

Part 1 – Brussels, 2005: EamesCollapse )

Planning fics

I figured I'd write this down in the hope that this will make it more likely I'm actually going to write them.

I have a variety of ideas for the continuation of the universe I seem to have created with 'The Man who had none of the luck' - from now on known as the 'Man who had' universe, since people seem to be enthusiatic about the idea of the sequal.

Titles are merely ideas at the moment and subject to change

Main (aka plotty epic) fics:
The Man who had Only Dreams - Prequal dealing with the start of Eames and Arthur's relationship up to and just post-movie.
The Man who had None of the Luck - Found elsewhere in this journal.
The Man who had All the Secrets - Sequal set five years after. Arthur and Eames' jobs and pasts catch up with them, will they survive it.

All these will be Arthur and Eames POV

Interludes around these:
Knowing v Understanding - Phillipa POV Found elsewhere in this journal
Ding Dong the Bells are Going to Chime - Cobb POV reflections on the evolution of his friend's relationship whilst planning for and during their marriage.
A Forger by Any Other Name - Ariadne POV her growing realisation of Arthur and Eames relationship during and immediately post the Fischer job.

I'm hoping some (or all) of these grab people. I know which I will probably manage first, but any requests/preferences may sway me elsewhere. They will however take much longer than my previous offerings due to actually now being back at work.

Knowing vs Understanding

Title: Knowing vs Understanding
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Arthur/Eames
Warnings: some very oblique allusions to violence and rape/attempted rape.
Summary: Phillipa has known her Uncle Eames and Uncle Arthur almost all her life, but she doesn't think she'll ever really understand them.
Disclaimer: Just playing, really I am.

Author's note: since my brain has decided my time off is going to be spent writing rather than tidying the house or any of the many many other things I have to do, here's another one for you all. This started out as pure unadulterated fluff and it maybe went a little darker towards the end, but on the scale of my writing, this is firmly in the sappy fluffy terroritory.
The story does make allusions to events from, 'The Man who Had None of the Luck' but you really don't need to have read that one to understand it at all.
